Sunset tones are the best for boosting positivity and a sense of fun in the home, according to color psychologists.

If you’re looking to break away from a generic pale bathroom, you can use colors skillfully to help elicit certain moods or feelings.

From calming to energizing, different tones can encourage certain dispositions.

So whether you’re a soothing bubble bath person or go for a quick cold blast shower, your interior design can play a role in suiting your style.

Rikki Fothergill, bathroom style expert at luxury bathroom specialists Big Bathroom Shop, along with color psychologist Lee Chambers, says some colors are better than others for achieving this effect.

Blue

Lee says: ‘Blue can give us a feeling of stability and security, especially when we are anxious or unsettled.’

It’s a calming color that helps you feel centered and relaxed.

Rikki recommends adding it to a bathroom through tiling.

‘High gloss tiles make for a beautiful feature wall or splash back and pair with brushed brass fixtures for the perfect luxurious combination,’ she says.

White

A classic bathroom color.

Lee says: ‘Because white brings in light, it can cause an uplift in mood and bring an element of serenity if we are overstimulated.

‘It can also really open up a space both physically and in our minds.’

Rikki adds: ‘With smaller bathrooms it can make them appear more spacious, open, and inviting.

‘When working with white you have the freedom to pair with any other colors you like. My particular favorites are grey, blue and black – all of which could be applied to modern or more traditional bathroom styles.

‘A matte black countertop sink with matching fixtures would look truly striking against white.’

Orange

‘Orange encourages positivity and energy and is a great color to bring into the home, especially at the start of a new year,’ says Rikki.

According to Lee, it can psychologically compel us to be more social and give a boost in optimism and hope.

‘It is a warm color that is welcoming and can raise our heartbeat,’ she adds.

Terracotta is an up-and-coming shade for 2022 and has a subtle tone of orange to incorporate.

Green

‘Known as the color of nature, and one that we have been surrounded by all through evolution, it can be beneficial for both our mood and our wellbeing,’ Lee says.

Rikki adds that the shade is on trend, given the pandemic mindset of bringing the outdoors in.

‘Introduce sprawling houseplants to place on a shelf or vanity, paint the walls in sage or even use emerald green tiles to create a statement shower,’ she suggests.

Pink

Pink can make us feel both playful and soothed at once, according to Lee.

To style the shade, Rikki says: ‘Pale and muted pink wall paneling will bring depth and texture to the bathroom and styling with brass and brushed gold fixtures will create a warm and happy space.’

Time to get redecorating.
